JAMAICA’S FM ELLIOTT BATTLE GRANDMASTERS IN DAYTON MASTERS TOURNAMENT
For most chess players, playing against one of the world’s Chess Grandmasters is a very rare opportunity. An opportunity to play against four of them in the same tournament is a life-time experience. Jamaica’s number one player, FIDE Master (FM) Warren Elliott recently got one of those life-time opportunities, when he participated in the third staging of the Dayton Masters Tournament held in Dayton, Ohio, USA from July 18 to 22.
FM Elliott, who has won Jamaica’s National Chess Championships a record eight times, jumped on the opportunity which arose when one of the original participants pulled out and the space was offered to a Jamaican player. Despite not meeting the minimum rating criterion for the event, the organisers allowed the Jamaican master to play.
In what would have been his toughest assignment to date, Elliott faced four Grandmasters, four FMs and a National Master, in a round robin with nine rounds. Two rounds were played each day, except the last day, which only had one round.
When the grueling five-day event was complete, FM Elliott secured two points from his nine games, defeating National Master William Sadler of the USA and drawing with FMs Carl Boor of the USA and Gauri Shankar of India.
Despite losing to each of the four Grandmasters he faced, Sergei Azarov, Priyadharshan Kannappan, Akshat Chandra and Vladimir Georgiev, Elliott took away significant experience which he will take into his next major competition.
The tournament was won by Grandmaster Sergei Azarov who ended on 7.5 points, second was Grandmaster Priyadharshan Kannappan with 6.5 and third was Grandmaster Vladimir Georgiev who finished on 6 points.
